Welcome to Term 2
As we begin term 2 there have been a number of staffing updates. I will be continuing in the role of Acting Principal across the term as the Principal’s position is re-advertised. I would also like to congratulate Elizabeth Gary-Smith on winning a position for the remainder of the year within the Learning Improvement Team in Central Office. She will be working on site at Kapunda High School for the term on Tuesdays to support the completion of her year 12 Research Project course.
KHS ANZAC Ceremony
We began the term with a special ANZAC assembly co-ordinated by our Prefects and SRC. The respect of the whole school community was evident throughout and is testimony to the calibre of our students – many of whom attended ANZAC Day Dawn Service at Kapunda on Sunday. I would like to thank Commander, Chis Jones, attending as a representative of the ADF and Adrian Laubsch, who performed The Last Post and Reverie. Both made themselves available following the assembly to meet with students interested in a career in the armed forces.
Open Day
This Sunday is our Open Day and I would encourage all families with students in years 6 and 7 to come along – even if you already have a child attending our school. The school will be open from 1:30pm - 4:00pm for families to visit a number of displays around the school.
The Term Ahead
This term is traditionally a very busy one and I encourage you to ‘keep track’ of key events by reading the newsletter and following us on Facebook. I’d also like to remind you of the information that is available on ‘DayMap’ in relation to your child’s progress. While our end of term reports provide summary information of student achievement, you can use the parent portal to gain access to assessment information in ‘real time’.
Year 12 Holiday Seminars and Musical Rehearsals
I would like to acknowledge the teaching staff who offered their students the opportunity to come in and work at school at various times during the holidays - providing individualized and small group support.
Similarly, I would like to congratulate the students who made a decision to attend a holiday session here at school and/or attend a school funded seminar conducted in Adelaide.
Year 9 NAPLAN
NAPLAN assessments are occurring in weeks 3 and 4 of this term.
At Kapunda High School, we greatly value the data we receive - both on a whole school level as well as individually. It enables us to see where our students have strengths and where we need to have greater emphasis.
For students and parents it is a really great insight and snapshot ahead of the senior years. In fact, as part of their Personal Learning Plan in Year 10, students reflect on their literacy and numeracy skills as indicated by their NAPLAN results.
Interestingly, students who are absent for NAPLAN tests are viewed by the Department as not having demonstrated the Standard of Educational Achievement (SEA) for Year 9.
That is why we strongly encourage full attendance and do all we can to ‘catch up’ if students have been absent due to illness, etc.
If you wish to discuss exemption or withdrawal from NAPLAN, please contact me as soon as possible.
Tim Jones
Principal
Concrete was poured this week for the third floor of the new building facing the sports field, as progress continues on the new development at our school. Fixing on the internals of the Middle School Suite is also underway. Visitors may be able to have a closer look at the Middle School building during our Open Day on Sunday.
The old changerooms were demolished during the school holidays and the new facilities attached to the gymnasium are now in use. The student toilet block is now being refurbished.
