Farewells
At the end of term, we will farewell our canteen manager, Mrs Deb Hook. Deb has been with the school for the past fourteen years. Deb has not only been a valued manager, but has provided support, mentoring and a positive voice within our school. Deb will be missed as she now moves into a new catering role. On behalf of the Governing Council and wider school community, I would like to thank Deb for her contributions to our school over the many years of service.
At the beginning of the year, we welcomed Ms Hannah Smith to teach Mathematics and Science across semester to backfill Christie Bridge who was on Maternity leave. Many thanks, Hannah, for the work you have done to support the learning of our students this year.
Australian Business Week
This week over fifty of our Year 11 students have been involved in Australian Business Week It has been amazing to see the number of students involved in the competition. This year's simulation is based on hospitality where teams will manage the purchase and operation of hotels. Teams work together make good ‘business’ decisions and are judged on Friday's trade display, a marketing, company report and an oral presentation. This is the first year Kapunda High School has been the only school competing within the district so it have been great to see five teams in the competition. Thank you to our local coordinator, Erin Carpenter and mentor teachers Michael Raschella, Hannah Smith, Brae McConnell, Jessica Read and Greg McLachlan.
Youth Opportunities Graduations
Next Tuesday and Wednesday evening sees the Youth Opportunities graduations. Youth Opportunities is a personal leadership programme for year 10 students. Students nominate to be involved and go through a selection process.
Students are selected for many reasons – sometimes they lack motivation with their learning, sometimes they are looking to develop extra confidence, sometimes they are looking to develop a clear idea of their pathway beyond school, sometimes they want to improve their relationships with others.
Facilitated by two trainers, students come out of classes for one day per week during term 2 to participate in the programme.
A special thanks to Karen Bromley and Meagan Menzel, our Youth Opportunities Trainers this term.

The SRC have been raising funds for the World's Greatest Shave over the last term and at this stage, we have raised close to $2000. Students were able to take part in a variety of ways, including shaving at a school assembly, having their hair coloured during lunch time and we even had one student brave enough to wax his hairy legs!
It wasn't only the SRC that participated, with all students being invited to cut, colour or wax outside of school hours. All students did a great job and we are extremely grateful to Chantel and the team at Casual Bliss Salon in Kapunda for donating their time to shave and cut the boy's hair.

Science and Engineering Challenge
Science and Engineering Challenge
On 10 June, a 28-member strong group of Year 8 to 10 students travelled to Festival Functions, Findon to participate in the University of Newcastle’s Science and Engineering Challenge 2021. The students participated in tasks that tested their teamwork and cooperation, mathematics, engineering, and science prowess. Some of the activities for the day included designing and making an earthquake resistant tower, maintaining power supplies to a city whilst making a profit, and manufacturing a hovercraft that was fast and manoeuvrable. The boys from Year 10 displayed and tested their bridge building abilities against the other schools in the final activity, where we finished second only by bridge weight. After a long and successful day, our Kapunda High School team achieved an overall second place against some very impressive competitors. In addition, we also achieved two first place rankings for the half day challenge sessions that included creating a bionic hand and a water turbine!
This team was an absolutely amazing representation of our school. Both Mrs Laney and Mr Raschella were extremely proud of the students’ efforts on the day and could not have asked for anything more from those who attended.
Mrs Laney and Mr Raschella
This term in Year 9 Science, students have been exploring the topics of Heat, Light and Sound. The highlight of this topic always seems to be the sheep’s eye dissection! Mr Raschella’s class had the opportunity to use pigs eyes, they are closer to human eyes than the sheep and the students found the experience quite enlightening. The pigs eyes were donated, by Seven Point Pork at Port Wakefield. They were of excellent quality and very fresh!
The Science Faculty would like to recognise the generosity of Seven Point Pork, which enables students at KHS to enjoy more engaging learning activities by reducing the costs of our practical lessons. So to Seven Point Pork; KHS and our Science teachers thank you very much for your support, in providing the opportunity for the students to engage in an authentic learning experience.
A massive thanks to the Kapunda Shed for generously donating large outdoor games to our school. The Domino and Connect Four games will be great for the students and teachers to use.
Year 9 Design and Technology students, lead by teachers, Shaun Hausler and Paul Johnson, have been busy building festive decorations fr the Light Regional Council. These projects will be placed in the community during the Christmas holiday period. Fantastic effort!
A group of Year 6 students visited recently and had a taste of High School Science. Students enjoyed tackling the Granny on a Ramp experiment.
