Students wearing masks, following SA Health guidelines
Keeping Connected with KHS and Learning
As we have now re-commenced face-to-face learning across the state, I would like to acknowledge the work of staff and students who embraced online learning. Student engagement and attendance remained high during online lessons. It was amazing to see how our teaching and support staff worked collaboratively to ensure our school community was supported during this time.
I have been suitably impressed with the way our school community has followed SA Health guidelines around the wearing of masks by staff and students in an education setting. In the interim, we have been instructed to minimise visitors to Kapunda High School and are in the process of reviewing school events that are scheduled to take place in coming weeks.
Camps, Excursions & Musical Production
Due to the nature of the year 11 camp, a decision has been made to cancel the camp, and the school will be making contact regarding refunds of monies paid. We are anticipating that with no further restrictions in place, the year 9 camp will proceed as planned. We will be guided by ongoing advice from the Premier and Department for Education. If the camp is unable to run due to COVID-19, all payments will be refunded. The Kapunda High School Musical Production has been postponed and we are exploring options for an alternative date and venue for the musical to be rescheduled this year. We will update families involved across this week. Hopefully, we will remain in a strong position within South Australia and schools can remain open. We are focussed on maximising learning opportunities for students and keeping connected with our families. As we are able to provide additional information, we will endeavour to communicate this in a timely manner.
Year 10 Work Experience
Preparations for year 10 work experience next week are continuing. Current advice is that workplace learning programs can resume. Students will need to comply with any safety requirements that are applicable to staff in relation to COVID-19 at their placement. We are aware that some employers may not be in a position to take on students for work experience, due to restrictions that may be placed on their business activity. If this situation arises, we will support students in completing their work experience at an alternative time and work with students to ensure this component of their Personal Learning Plan (PLP) is still achieved.
Re-Development News
As a result of COVID-19 and the onset of winter conditions, the expected handover dates have been pushed out by a number of weeks. The latest advice from Marshall and Brougham is that all works are still on track for completion this year and that we will have all facilities ready for use at the beginning of 2022.
Parent Engagement Survey
The Department for Education Parent Survey is a great opportunity to get valuable insights into parent engagement of your students’ learning. As a parent you would have been sent an invitation directly from the Department on Monday 2 August 2021. I would encourage all families to participate by completing the survey, using the personalised link.
Parents can find more information at www.education.sa.gov.au/parentsurvey

This term sees the start of the process for subject selection; all students from Year 8 to 11 will need to choose their subjects for 2022. Starting with Year 11, there will be a series of common steps for each year level to ensure students make the best possible choices for their pathway.
These common steps involve:
1. All students have received information regarding subject selection for next year. This included a summary letter to go home to families, and information allowing students to access the online subject selection portal with a unique login code.
2. Copies of the Middle School (years 9/10) and Senior School (years 11/12) Curriculum Books are available online at: www.kapundahs.sa.edu/curriculum Information includes the subjects available in each of the year levels, course content, student advice, where the course leads, and assessment requirements.
3. Relevant SACE/VET and Subject information to be presented to year level groups. Students have been encouraged to speak to parents/caregivers and teaching staff about their subject choices.
4. Families of students in year 8-10 are encouraged to access a SACE/VET and Careers Video that is scheduled to be available during week 4. In light of COVID restrictions it is not feasible to have a parent information night to share the relevant information.
Closing date for yr 10/11 initial preferences is Friday 6th August (Week 3)
Closing date for yr 8/9 preferences is Friday 3rd September (Week 7)
5. Senior School (year 10/11) Course Counselling Meetings for Senior School. Students will take place on the evening of Thursday, 19 August, and during the day on Friday, 20 August and Monday, 23 August. Bookings can be made through the website:
www.schoolinterviews.com.au using the booking code 8eqnm
To support this process:
-
- There will be no year 10 students at school on Friday, 20 August
- There will be no year 11 students at school on Monday, 24 August
6. Families of students in year 8 and 9
All students have the opportunity to meet with a Year level Coordinator/Course Counsellor to discuss their options for subjects in 2022 if they wish. Parents and Caregivers are welcome to contact the school and make an appointment if they would like to be present.
7. Choices made will generate classes and a school timetable is then developed. Early in Term 4, all students and parents will receive a letter confirming the choices made and any changes that are required due to timetable clashes or classes, which are not running. Changes of subject choice can be made at this stage.
