House Captains, Blake Marsden (Hawke), Tahlia Wendt (Kidman) & Grace Blows (Hughes) show their approval for our new totem signs
Nearing the end of week seven, we are not only preparing for the end of term, but also getting ready for 2022. With our building development continuing to be on track, staff have been working intensively over the past few weeks on curriculum planning for 2022 over the last few weeks. We have also had to opportunity to meet our future year 7 and 8 students for 2022 as the transition process begins. The significance of 2022 extends well beyond our first cohort of year 7's at Kapunda High School with this also being the 100 year anniversary of secondary students transitioning from the Kapunda Primary School site to Eringa, following the generous donation by Sir Sidney Kidman to the Education Department in 1921.
Year 7 Transition
Across this week, Kapunda High School hosted the transitioning primary school year 6 and year 7 students. This is a significant step in preparation for the double cohort starting next year. Students have had a taste of a number of specialist subjects including Drama, Home Economics, Health and Physical Education (HPE) and Science. To date, the year 6 students have had two half-day visits and the year 7 students have had one half day visit. Preparations are underway for the full-day transition, which takes place in term 4. There is a significant amount of planning required to support and welcome our new students to Kapunda High School and I would like to acknowledge the work of Lee-Anne Cummins and her team of staff and SSO's who have coordinated and run the transition program.
Pupil Free Day
As this newsletter is published (Friday, 3 September), KHS will have a pupil free day for staff to continue their preparation for our double intake of an expected 240 students at the beginning of 2022. Teams will be working on curriculum planning and mapping to support these students as they begin their secondary schooling. This will be followed by a school closure day on Monday, 6 September.
Tour of New Facilities
We have been fortunate to have an opportunity to invite our Governing Council and Centenary Foundation members on a tour of our new building facilities. Marshall and Brougham, as part of the schools immersion program, were able to lead the group through building B - part of the new middle school area and building A - the larger building on the edge of the oval.
Sun Protection Policy
As we are now experiencing some warmer spring weather, it is a timely reminder that we all need to consider protecting ourselves from the harmful effects of the sun. I have provided a brief reminder below from our Sun Protection Policy, which is available on our school website:
Students and staff are required to wear hats in terms 1, and 4 and whenever the UV level is 3 and above in terms 2 and 3. If students do not have a hat at school on a particular day, they will be required to sit in a solid shaded area (eg gymnasium verandah or the Resource Centre verandah). Students can remove their hats if seated in a shaded area.
As part of WHS UV risk controls and role modelling, staff, families and visitors:
- Wear sun protective hats/umbrellas, clothing and sunglasses when outside
- Apply SPF 30 or higher broad spectrum, water resistant sunscreen
- Seek shade whenever possible.
- Promote rehydration of students through reinforcing drink bottles are filled during break times for use in classrooms.
End of Term Arrangements
Friday, 24 September is the final day of the term. There will be lessons in the morning and after lunch we will have our customary end-of-term assembly prior to dismissal at 2:15pm. Buses (apart from the Gawler Link SA Service) will leave shortly after. At assembly, we present Personal Best Awards for students who have achieved ‘excellent’ effort in all or most of their subjects. Hard copy reports will be issued to students at the end of assembly. They will also be available on Daymap from the end of the day.
The first day of Term 4 is Monday, 11 October.

Spring has arrived and as the weather warms up, personal hygiene becomes increasingly important.
The use of spray deodorants in our school environment poses a significant danger to people who have asthma and other allergies. Sometimes we under-estimate the impact that they can have on the health and wellbeing of others.
Strong smelling colognes and perfumes can also trigger a similar response, particularly when applied in confined places such as classrooms and hallways.
Spraying them in rooms or the vicinity of others is very dangerous as across Australia, on average, one person dies each day as a consequence of asthma.
Gday! My name is Corrina Schutz and I am a new SSO here in term 3 at KHS.
It has been wonderful getting to know the students and staff here - where I went to school over 20 years ago now. I find being able to support the students and see them achieve above and beyond is very rewarding!
Aside from school, I love music, hiking, summer, road trips, baking and spending time with my family and friends.
Congratulations to our ASETO, Graham Rigney, who was awarded the Adelaide Plains Football League Junior Coach of the Year on Monday evening this week. This award is peer voted by the other club coaches, which shows the high regard he is held in with the APFL . KHS also values Graham's involvement in our school and support he gives to our students.
Kapunda High School has again having a most successful and eventful year and it is now the time when we are looking to acknowledge the success of our students and their efforts throughout the year.
To do this we rely very much on the generosity of local businesses, community members, organisations, parents and staff of Kapunda High School, to support us. In the past we have been very pleased with the response to our invitations calling for donations to enable the whole community to be part of our school’s success.
We now have pleasure in inviting you to make a donation towards our evening in 2021. The prize will be awarded at our annual Presentation Evening on Monday, 6 December 2021. We cordially invite you to view our live-stream of the event; a link to be forwarded in due course. The UV rating is beginning to climb, and consistently hovers around level 4 or 5 for most of the day. The UV rays come through the cloud layers and therefore even on a cloudy day, we need to be wearing broad-brimmed or bucket style hats and sunscreen to safeguard damage against these rays.
Hats may be brought from home and be any colour. The hats may include logos, providing they do not promote alcohol, drugs make other illegal or inappropriate references. Alternatively, the school has a range of hats at affordable prices that are available from the Reception office.
- Reversible sports hats $9
- Bucket Hats $12
- Broad-brimmed $15
It is important that KHS is kept up-to-date with information about student health, particularly when emergency medical support is required for students. A health overview is helpful to both KHS staff and ambulance officers to provide adequate support. If your child has been recently diagnosed with a health condition or you are unsure if the school is aware of a student health condition, please click on the following link, complete a Health Profile and returned the form to school.
