Minister for Education, John Gardner with Year 12 student and Prefect, Taya Dabrowski
Children’s Week Minister for Education Award
Congratulations to Year 12 student, Taya Dabrowski, who has been recognised in the 2021 Children’s Week Minister for Education Awards for her outstanding achievement and excellence at school, working in the community and VET.
Taya has shown great endeavour towards her schoolwork, sport and in supporting those less able than her. She has been an SRC representative and prefect, using her position to empower and support other students.
Through her participation in the Youth Opportunities program in 2019, Taya identified a desire to improve her own resilience and determination as well as a desire to support others, particularly those with disabilities. Taya then completed a Certificate III in Individual Support (Disability) and is currently undertaking a Certificate IV in School Aged Care and Education Support with Happy Haven OSHC in Nuriootpa.
During her Year 12 Research Project course, Taya continued to learn more about children on the Autism Spectrum and how to support their needs. She has connected not only with the children, but also with parents and other care providers to expand her growing repertoire of skills and knowledge. Taya has been improving her understanding in this area and shares her growing skillset with others.
We look forward to following Taya’s next steps as she continues to contribute to the community and support those with disabilities.

Barossa Districts Rotary Club VET Awards
VET Coordinator, Jason Keep with Taya Dabrowski
On Monday, 25 October, Year 12 student, Taya Dabrowski, was presented with an Outstanding Merit award at the VET Student of the Year ceremony. The ceremony was held at the Vine Inn, Nuriootpa and organised by the Barossa Districts Rotary Club.
This was in light of Taya’s outstanding commitment towards her Certificate lV in School Aged Care and Education Support studied through ACCCO as a traineeship, with her employer being Happy Haven OSHC.
The award recognised her achievement within the course, at the OHSC and with her schooling at Kapunda High School.
Her commitment can be summed up by the feedback from her trainer.
To be able to successfully complete a traineeship within 12 months and complete year 12 is admirable and reflects her commitment, intelligence and work ethic.

On Thursday, 21 October, four Year 10 students were chosen to represent Kapunda High School at the University of South Australia’s STEM Innovation Experience Regional Showcase. On the day, the students presented the class’ constructions and findings from the program that was undertaken during Term 3. This is the first time that Kapunda High School has participated in the program and overall, the students excelled and stepped out of their comfort zones to showcase their peer’s work. Congratulations to Britnie Antony, Leilah Pryor, Connon Shepherd and Trent Goodridge for their outstanding teamwork and presentations to the UniSA Connect Staff and State Emergency Service representatives at the Regional Showcase. The group finished the program with 33 points, placing Kapunda High School in the top thirteen schools which participated. They are to be commended for how they conducted themselves in both the program and South Australian community at the Regional Showcase.
Kapunda High School representatives were presented with a silver medal to keep as a token of their participation, as well as a trophy and certificate of participation, which will be presented to the school at an assembly this term. All other class participants will also receive a certificate for their participation in the program once received from UniSA.

Britnie and Leilah presenting their groups mathematical dynamic spreadsheet findings to Anita Trenwith (UniSA Connect Officer and Program Coordinator) on how classical swine fever and weeds impact local Barossa farms.
Leilah presenting the technology groups flood mitigation prototype device to Prospect SES representatives which used an Arduino coded water sensor to detect rising water levels and then sound a buzzer to alert civilians along with a flashing red light and start the motor to raise a flood gate.
Trent presenting his Lego engineered robot to the other schools present at the regional showcase and UniSA Connect Staff. Unfortunately for Trent and his peers, back at school, the robot was unable to move the chicken and keep the head on as well as move an egg to the chicken’s nest. Despite this, Trent showed high levels of professionalism and stayed strong watching the other schools show off their robust digital technology skills.
