National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Children's Day
Kapunda High Aboriginal Learners had the opportunity to participate in and support the successful running of the Aboriginal Children’s Day Celebrations at the Kapunda Town Square on Monday August 5th. This event had been organised by Abby Walker Schwarz from the Kapunda Kindergarten. The Kapunda High students supported the successful running of the celebration by acting as guides for the Kapunda Kindergarten and Kapunda primary school students. Our acknowledgement of country team ( Y12: Oscar Winkworth, Y12 Henry Stoddard, Y11 Jada Rigney and Y8 Teagan Rigney) presented our Acknowledgement of Country to Ngadjuri elders, this was greatly received by the elders who were touched to receive such a positive acknowledgement from the students. All the Kapunda High students who participated received a certificate to recognise their positive effort and achievement from the day. This was a very successful event, and we hope that it will become an annual event on the Kapunda calendar.

On Saturday, 20th July, forty-six excited students and six teachers, from Kapunda High School and Eudunda Area School boarded the bus to Mount Hotham for a week of fun in the snow. The conditions were almost perfect thanks to a large snowfall the day before, and we arrived early afternoon on the Sunday to snow blanketing the ground and trees as we ascended the mountain. Students quickly changed into their snow gear and were off to their first lessons in either skiing or snowboarding. The wind and sleet did its best to dampen our spirits on day one but didn’t faze students as they embraced mastering new skills. The group continued lessons Monday through to Thursday in the morning sessions to progress their abilities, and then had fun exploring the different trails, tobogganing, or building snowmen in the afternoons with friends. The accommodation was fantastic, especially the girls’ lodge with million-dollar views, and our hosts and cooks were so friendly.
One of the evening highlights was the Wednesday night burger meal and silent disco at Frankie’s at the Big D. The group was lucky enough to have a windy and snowy afternoon on Thursday, and this set up a wonderful finish on Friday for our last day of blue skies, sunshine, and 8cm of fresh powder. The students and teachers made the most of the conditions, despite some sore bodies, until the early afternoon before we packed up and departed at 4pm to head home.
A huge thank you to the organizing teachers, Mr Nathan Brady and Mr Nathan Close, for their hard work liaising with World Strides Australia for months prior to set up such a great camp. Thanks also to the other attending teachers, Rachel Moore, Scott Durand, Brianna Falland, and Shani Robinson. Lastly, well done to all the students on being such a great bunch and representing their schools to such a high standard.

Japanese Exchange Student Visit
Kapunda High School is presently welcoming 10 students from Meidai Junior and Senior High School in Tokyo, Japan. The students are at Kapunda High School for two weeks from August 1st to 14th. The students have visited the Kapunda museum, Little Mo's Bakery, Map the Miner, the Barossa, Kapunda Primary School and Freeling Primary School including participating in Aboriginal Childrens Day at the Kapunda Town Square. They are having a great time practicing their English and learning about Australian culture. The Kapunda High students have extended a warm welcome to the students. This has been appreciated by the Japanese teacher (Mr Nishimura) and the Japanese students. Kapunda High would like to acknowledge the goodwill of the host families for opening their home to the students and making this exchange possible. Kapunda High is enormously grateful!

Year 11 Business Innovation: Unleashing Entrepreneurial Potential
Our Year 11 Business Innovation students have embarked on an exciting journey, delving into the business models of leading global companies like Microsoft, Tesla, Mecca, and IKEA. This term, we have been assessing these models to understand the dynamics of successful enterprises. By analysing how these giant corporations operate, students are developing critical insights into strategic planning, innovation, and market positioning.
Through hands-on projects and interactive discussions, our budding entrepreneurs are not only learning theoretical concepts but also applying them to real-world scenarios. We will be consolidating this with an excursion later this year that will allow us to talk to real life business owners and to tour their operations. They have demonstrated remarkable creativity and analytical skills so far, showing a keen understanding of what it takes to thrive in the competitive business landscape. We are confident that these experiences will serve as a strong foundation for their future endeavors in the world of business, no matter where they find themselves and strongly connect to Stage 2 Business Innovation.
The value proposition canvas helps guide our analysis by initially focusing on customers. We then assess the value the business is trying to create and determine how well they are meeting customer needs. These are critical 21st century entrepreneurial skills.

On Wednesday 31st August, the Year 9/10 Netball team travelled to Adelaide to compete in Round 2 of the Statewide Netball Competition.
They defeated Adelaide Botanic High School in the first game, and played a tense game against Cedar College before defeating them 34 to 32.
The team will go on to compete in the finals later this month.
The Drama program is desperate for some props and costumes for our up-and-coming plays. If you have some suit jackets, dresses, shirts, hats (we need some character hats like a firefighter, or detective) for children aged 12 - 18. We would also love to get some coat hangers as we need to hang these up. We are also on the hunt for anything medieval for our year 11 play.
If you would like to ask any more questions, please contact me via email or DayMap.
Many thanks in advance,

Open Music Academy Connection Day
On Friday 2nd September, year 9, 10 and 11 music students participated in an Open Music Academy Connection Day. Staff and students from Elder Conservatorium (Adelaide University) visited Kapunda High and engaged our students with a performance, creative music workshop and song writing activity. It was great to see the genuine participation of our students and them being able to create music together.
In October, senior students will participate in a Discovery Day at Elder Conservatorium which will consist of attending a lunchtime concert and workshops to build on the student’s song writing and creative skills.

Kapunda High School’s Year 12 Child Studies class has recently completed their first group task. For this assessment students design and create a sensory toy for junior primary aged students. These toys are intended to be used as regulation tools, aiding young children in managing their emotions and sensory needs. The students utilised the creative workspace known as the “Hamster Wheel” in integrate various types of technologies into their projects. An example from this assessment is the creation of a classroom storage box, designed to hold all the sensory toys. The storage box was developed using a box measurement generator, Adobe Illustrator, and the Tech centre’s laser cutter. Students then decorated these boxes to make them suitable and engaging for a junior primary class.
This assignment is an example of how our faculty is actively incorporating cross-curriculum learning into students’ assessments. Through engaging with multiple forms of technologies, students are developing practical skills and learning to create products with real-world applications.

Stress is a normal part of life for teenagers, stress can make us feel alert and vigilant which can be beneficial in some situations, even saving our lives.
Stress can be caused by many different situations, feelings and emotions. We can all feel stressed from time to time, but when stress has been happening for a while and it starts to affect our every day lives, we need to stop and pay attention.
There are things we can do to help ourselves and manage stress.
- Take a break, go for a walk, drink a cuppa, call a friend
- Watch cats/puppies/babies videos
- Do something you love, even for 5 minutes.
To avoid stress build up:
- Make a list of what needs to get done
- Focus on the positive
- Think about the end goal.
And don’t forget to:
Practice self-love, be grateful and surprise someone with an act of kindness ?
