Dear KHS families,
Welcome to our final School Newsletter for Term 3, 2024. As we reach the end of another successful term, I want to take a moment to reflect on our students’ achievements and share some important updates with our school community.
Celebrating Achievements
This term has been filled with numerous accomplishments, both academically and in extracurricular activities. Our students have shown remarkable dedication and resilience, achieving outstanding results in their studies and excelling in their studies, school sports and contributing to our positive school culture. I am incredibly proud of their hard work and commitment.
Some recent highlights have included:
- Immersive Passion Projects.
- Wellbeing Community Breakfast.
- Healthy Minds Wellbeing program day.
- Year 7 Transition Day from Kapunda PS.
- Year 8/11 Drama production.
- Year 9/10 Financial Literacy workshops.
- Year 11 RYDA road safety workshop.
- Aboriginal and Torres Straight Islander Bush Gardens excursions.
- Kapunda PS Science day visit.
- VET Doorways 2 Construction and Heritage Trades students restoring the Kidman Coach House.
Academic Highlights
Our Year 12 students have been diligently preparing for their final exams, and I am confident that their efforts will be rewarded. We have also seen significant progress in literacy and numeracy across all year levels, thanks to the dedication of our teaching staff and the support of parents and guardians. Study tuition workshops will be hosted at Kapunda HS for specific Year 12 subjects over the upcoming school holidays, I encourage students to make the most of these opportunities and acknowledge the extra work teachers are volunteering to support and extend students’ learning.
Extracurricular Success
Congratulations to all students and staff on your efforts in School Sports over what has been an exceptional year of achievements in 2024! Well done to HPE Coordinator Mr Mark Leslie, Sports Manager Miss Brianna Falland and the team on your dedication and commitment to providing high-quality PE curriculum and sports opportunities. An acknowledgement and thank you also to parent/caregiver volunteers for your ongoing commitment and support, to enable valuable school sporting experiences to take place for students. Well done students!
Looking Ahead
As we look forward to the next term, there are several exciting events and initiatives planned. We will continue to focus on providing a supportive and enriching learning environment for all students. Our staff will be participating in professional development workshops to ensure we are equipped with the latest teaching strategies and resources. Our school re-build is also progressing well, with works currently underway. I look forward to sharing further progress and updates with you in the near future.
Thank You
I want to extend my heartfelt thanks to our dedicated staff, supportive parents, and hardworking students. Your collective efforts make our school a wonderful place to learn and grow. I encourage everyone to take a well-deserved break over the holidays and return refreshed and ready for the challenges and opportunities of the new term.
I look forward to welcome students back to school for Term 4 on Monday 14th October.

Please be aware that throughout Term 4, the Canteen will be closed on Wednesdays. This will begin on Wednesday 16th October (Week 1).
Unfortunately this is due to a lack of sales on Wednesdays, and also a lack of volunteers.
With the 2025 school year fast approaching, we are keen to hear from anyone who is interested in volunteering in the Canteen.
Volunteers play a vital role in our school canteen being able to offer a wide variety of healthy food to our students and staff at recess and lunch times. Volunteers are encouraged to come and help in our canteen - even for an hour. Assistance during the peak preparation times, between 10:00am and 2:00pm would be most valued and appreciated. You can pick your times or days, even one day a fortnight or month, and it is really only 4 – 5 hours but you can do less if you wish to. And of course, a regular commitment would enable Canteen Manager, Deb, to better plan the menu in advance.
Any help at all would be greatly appreciated.
If anyone would like to know more about being a volunteer for next year please contact Kapunda High School on (08) 8566 2203 and ask for Kaye.

The Kapunda High School Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Learners were very fortunate to visit the Barossa Bush Garden on Monday 16th September. It was a perfect day for the visit with blue skies and warm temperatures. We had a tour of the garden and were led by Corrina Schutz's father Trevor. There was a wide range of trees, plants, shrubs and succulents to view. The information that Trevor shared on the symbiosis of plants, animals, insects and Aboriginal peoples was fascinating. The Barossa Bush Garden has many plants that were used by Aboriginal people as food sources and for their medicinal properties. Pig face is a succulent that can be used as a water source and for its medicinal anti-septic properties. The garden also has a nursey where you can buy native plants at very low prices. It was an excellent excursion that the students and staff found very valuable. Thank you to Mel Raschke and Mrs Winkworth for organising the day and I strongly urge a visit to the Barossa Bush Garden if you get a chance.

On Tuesday night, we witnessed the bravery and courage of two classes performing for live audiences. Our Year Eight drama class presented the play ‘Biz Town’, a gritty story of kids trying their best to live in a virtual adult world. The lead in our class was a standout. Secondly, we had our Stage 1 drama class perform ‘Shakespeare Abridged’, where we took Romeo and Juliet and Hamlet into a 30-minute production. Swords were thrown, and many laughs were heard. Working with both classes has been a pleasure; every student who performed should be very proud of themselves.

As part of her Year 12 Art and Community studies, Alexia successfully demonstrated the gelli printing process to a group of Year 7 students. After giving some background on the types of printing making, Alexia then stepped the students through the printmaking process. The Year 7 students did a great job and added their own flair to the process by using a gradient when applying the paint. A fantastic effort from everyone involved!

Students Shine at the Royal Adelaide Show
Throughout Terms 2 and 3, our dedicated students have spent countless lunchtimes preparing sheep, goats, dairy heifers, and poultry for the Royal Adelaide Show. Their hard work and commitment paid off with some outstanding results across several highly competitive agricultural events.
We are proud to announce that KHS achieved the following:
In the Schools Merino Wether Competition, KHS earned a prestigious 1st place in the "Three Most Valued Fleeces" category, showcasing the high fleece quality.
KHS also demonstrated excellence in poultry, securing a 2nd place ribbon in the School Egg Laying Competition for commercial layer quality.
The school’s dairy program was equally impressive, with KHS placing 6th in the Dairy Heifer Competition for animals born after January 1st of this year.
KHS also made a strong showing in the LED Wether Goat Competition, earning a 5th place ribbon in the lightweight 20.5-26.5kg class. This competition featured a large and competitive field, making the students' achievement in showcasing their goat-handling skills all the more impressive.
The Royal Adelaide Show is known for its high standards and large participant base, making KHS's success even more significant. The students’ efforts and dedication in preparing for these events paid off, as they proudly represented the school and showcased the agricultural excellence that KHS is known for.
A huge thank you to the following people for their unwavering support throughout the year: Andrew and Angela Koch, Phil Noack, Hawkers Creek Farm, Lindsay Meaney, Amanda and Andrew Lock, Paula Menzel, Emily Ritchie, Ian Koch, Kerensa Cornish, Lee-Anne Cummins, the Jones family, Lance Crowhurst, KHS staff, and KHS families. Your contributions have been instrumental to the success of this program, and we couldn’t have done it without you.

The Goat Team - Royal Show 2024
The Goat Team has been preparing for the Royal Show since Term 1, we have had upwards of 20 students working with Mrs Cornish, Mrs Cummins and the goats over that time. The favourite activity is "Speed Goating"! For the show, 8 students were able to attend, along with Emily Ritchie, breeder and owner of Kapunda Chevon - and previous SSO at KHS. I am very thankful for all our helpers and staff who come along to support the students at the Royal.
Once at the show, Mrs Cornish's first port of call is always to show the students the Dairy Pavillion, Tasting SA and the Goyder/Jubilee Pavillion where all the free food samples are. Students get good quality food without having to spend all their money! I'm reasonably certain that the Goat Club is responsible for the Yoghurt place losing money at the show for all their free samples.
The Show week started on Tuesday, with the kids arriving on the train to organise the shed, set up our area and make KHS stand out! Our position this year was right next to the judging and the main exit, so the students had a lot of interaction with the general public and other schools. Our goats were different, due to their colouring, so everyone wanted to have photos with them.
The Goat Club looked great going out to the Grand Parade, with the new signs Ms Bromley got this year and the Ag jumpers Mrs Tess Vogt was able to source in 2023. The students looked neat, bright and organised.
On Thursday morning, our goats were in the first two classes, Piper Wunderlich was lucky enough to receive a ribbon for her class, coming 5th with Campbell.
Piper and Campbell
The next class had the rest of our goats and they did not receive any ribbons, but they all behaved brilliantly (which is a big thing for our goats) and I thought they looked great - the students too!
After the first two classes, we were finished quite early, which meant we had time to enjoy the show.
We visited the Dog Shows, watching Pomeranians, Pointers and Agility classes. It is very different to the goats! We also saw loads of baby animals and the girls convinced Mrs Cornish to go on a ride.
After this we went to the Beef Cattle area (Mrs Cornish's favourite) and the girls were able to see how differently beef cattle are fitted for the show compared to dairy cattle. They got to see an Angus heifer and Highland bull being prepared - two very different animals. The men doing the fitting and the breeders with them were pleased to answer any questions the girls had.
If students are at all interested in Beef Cattle, please consider attending the SA Heifer Expo in the July school holidays, it is for young peopled aged 9 - 23 years and KHS has had lots of kids attend in the past. It is a camp, well worth it - many of my students have made great connections with breeders and ended up with jobs from the experience. As KHS no longer does the Led Steers competition, it is worth attending if you are interested in that industry.
The Sheep Expo is in the April school holidays, info is in the link provided! It is absolutely well worth it for anyone considering a career in animals, science, STEM, agriculture or agribusiness.
There is also going to be a Dairy Cattle equivalent and when we have that information, it will be shared.
At the end of the day, the Goat Club cleaned out their area and made the convenors really happy because they did such a great job. The convenors asked to keep the KHS kids because they are so clean and organised!
Thank you to all the students who worked with the goats throughout the year, it has been a fun season! I look forward to seeing you continue learning and networking with whichever animals you choose to work with next year! A huge thank you to Ms Bromley who organises everything to allow Ag Club to keep running each year, Mrs Cummins who is our wonderful GOAT judge at school, Lance who unlocks our sheds when needed and the Jones Family who are a force of their own a the show.

How To Smash Out Your School Assignment and Get A Good Grade
High school assignments can sometimes seem difficult and confusing. Not knowing how to do them, what to do, or where to start, impacts a students ability and willingness to try. Other times the hard work doesn't get a good grade, which is disheartening. This presentation is for students in secondary schools, to help them understand school assignments, how to get them done, and how to do them well. The same process can be applied for all assignments. The presentation will cover the steps along the way that help students know what they have to do, how to stay on track and how to complete each assignment. There will also be helpful tips and techniques from Teachers and SSO staff. This presentation is suited to students in years 7, 8 and 9, however, students in senior years would still benefit from this information.
Barossa United Football Club invites all Junior players to express interest in the 2025 season. Try-outs / grading will be held during the week of 14th October in preparation for the 2025 season. Dates will be announced soon. All players wishing to play in the 2025 soccer season should participate in the tryouts. Please use the link and fill out the JotForm.
